Teeth whitening is a cosmetic dentistry procedure that lightens the shade of your teeth by removing discoloration or surface stains. Professional in-office teeth whitening is generally more effective with safer, more noticeable and long-lasting results.

Teeth whitening and sensitivity

As whitening gels temporarily make your tooth enamel more permeable to expose the soft dentin layer containing the nerves of your teeth, it is common to experience some sensitivity in the few days following treatment. This temporary discomfort can be alleviated by taking an over-the-counter pain medication, a desensitizing toothpaste and avoiding hot/cold and acidic foods and drinks.

 

Teeth whitening and safety

Teeth whitening is generally considered safe and does not damage dental fillings, crowns and implants. However, it is not recommended for those who have gum disease, cracked teeth or cavities, which should be treated before teeth whitening procedure.
